The Community Garden creates a space for the community to connect and embrace the six pillars of lifestyle medicine. The garden also enabled us to introduce a produce prescription program utilizing fresh fruits and vegetables grown by the community.
To invite health care providers to prescribe healthy produce as medicine, feed the hungry in the community, and teach the lifestyle medicine principal of nutrition. Several free community classes were planned to educate the public, including youth and family focused programs.
The garden was created in the open lot adjacent to Rochester Clinic. The project was lead by Kim Sin and Kelly Rae Kirkpatrick with collaborative effort from UMR faculty and staff, and community growers. Special thanks to Rochester Sand & Gravel for donating soil for the garden.
